World’s first ‘tax’ on Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 7

Ever thought about getting away from Internet Explorer? Now’s the perfect time. Just by not upgrading to the latest version, you may be charged a 6.8% tax on your purchase!

Nice huh? Don’t worry, there are great alternatives: Firefox, Safari, Chrome

The Australian online retailer has introduced the world’s first “tax” on Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) browser.

Customers who use IE7 will have to pay an extra surcharge on online purchases made through the firm’s site.

Chief executive Ruslan Kogan told the BBC he wanted to recoup the time and costs involved in “rendering the website into a antique browser”.

The charge is set to 6.8% – 0.1% for every month since the IE7 launch.

Shows the 6.% charge added on to price.
Every month the surcharge will rise by 0.1%.

Too much effort

According to Mr Kogan the idea was born when the company started working on a site relaunch.

Mr Kogan said that even though only 3% of his customers used the old version of the browser, his IT team had become pre-occupied with making adaptations to make pages display properly on IE 7.

“I was constantly on the line to my web team. The amount of work and effort involved in making our website look normal on IE7 equalled the combined time of designing for Chrome, Safari and Firefox.”

Mr Kogan said it was unlikely that anyone would actually pay the charges. His goal is to encourage users to download a more up-to-date version of Internet Explorer or a different browser.

Mr Kogan told the BBC his customers were very happy and he had received a lot of praise for his efforts.

“Love your IE7 tax. I hope it becomes effective” was one of the messages posted to Kogan on Twitter.

IE7 was launched in 2006, but since then Microsoft has released two major updates to the software.

The launch of Internet Explorer 10 is due in the autumn.

Get GREEN – WordPress 3.4 is Finally here!

WordPress 3.4 is here and out the door. We’ve dubbed this release “Green” in honor of guitarist Grant Green whose soulful simplicity has kept many of us company during this release.

This release includes significant improvements to theme customization, custom headers, Twitter embeds, and image captions — here’s a short clip with the highlights:

Introducing WordPress 3.4 “Green”

For Users

The biggest change in 3.4 is the theme customizer which allows you to play around with various looks and settings for your current theme or one you’re thinking about switching to without publishing those changes to the whole world. For themes that support it, you can change colors, backgrounds, and of course custom image headers. We have more planned for the customizer down the road.

Throughout the rest of the admin you’ll notice tweaks to make your everyday life easier. For example, if you have lots of themes we’ve made it quicker to browse them all at once without paging. We’ve made it possible to use images from your media library to populate custom headers, and for you to choose the height and width of your header images.

We’ve expanded our embed support to include tweets: just put a Twitter permalink on its own line in the post editor and we’ll turn it into a beautiful embedded Tweet. And finally, image captions have been improved to allow HTML, like links, in them.

For Developers

There are hundreds of under-the-hood improvements in this release, notably in the XML-RPC, themes, and custom header APIs, and significant performance improvements in WP_Query and the translation system. The Codex has a pretty good summary of the developer features, and you can always dive into Trac directly.

We’ve also put together a busy developer’s field guide to the new APIs in 3.4.

Thunderbolt is very very frightening! MAC Update HELP if you’ve updated and crashed.

In the last couple of days, as many have found out, there is an update out for Apple OS X Lion’s Thunderbolt application. Thunderbolt is a revolutionary I/O technology that supports high-resolution displays and high-performance data devices through a single, compact port. It sets new standards for speed, flexibility, and simplicity. And it’s on MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini.

This is great and all, but with this new update, your computer will most likely crash and burn (like mine did). There is a solution though…so be hopeful! BEFORE YOU UPDATE your computer, always make sure you back up your data…I cannot stress this enough. If you have already updated and not backed up, there is hope.

When you get the gibberish (also called the kernel <panic>) your screen will tell you to simply restart your computer. You can do this, but it won’t fix a thing. What you can do is take the following steps to repair your computer, safely.

  1. Hold the power button down until your computer shuts off.
  2. Hold down the command and the R key at the same time (do not let go) and press the power button to turn your computer back on.
  3. While still holding the command+R keys, wait for the recovery screen to come up
  4. When the screen comes up, click Reinstall OS
  5. This will take you to the prompts to reinstall your Operating System for OS X Lion

The reinstall will take about an hour and half then put you into 10.7.3. It will retain all your files and prefs so nothing will be lost. Then go to your software update (top left apple dropdown) and you will be offered 10.7.4 and a few other updates; go ahead and do those. You will then be back where you were, and with a brand spanking new system. Going to software update again will offer you Thunderbolt and iPhoto. DON’T UPGRADE THOSE! Simply wait for Apple to come out with a fix.
